The Botanical Garden


Botanical garden is a green corner of Wroclaw, oasis of peace and purity. It’s conveniently located in the oldest part of the city on Tumski Island, near gothic cathedrals. Nowadays this garden is one of the oldest Botanical gardens in Europe, because it was founded in 1811 simultaneously with Wroclaw University. Besides, firstly it was intended for scientific investigations of this educational institution. During the Second World War it was fully destroyed and later reconstructed in details.





In 1948 decision of reconstruction of the botanical garden with was made. It was decided to restore it to the initial condition. This mission was entrusted to Professor Henry Telenzinsky and Stefan Mak. In 1958 when field engineer had completed clearing of the pond, a wooden arched bridge was built, which still is one of the most romantic places in the garden. In 1967 a special pool for water plants under architect Thaddeus Zipser’s project was constructed. From 1994 the botanical garden together with the historical city center surrounding it is considered a historical monument.

At preset the garden occupies 7.4 ha, above 7.5 thousand types of plants grow here. Visitors can see evergreen mahogany, Polish larch, oak-tree, yew-tree, beech, above 30 sorts of hyacinths and above 80 sorts of narcissi. Also there is a large collection of greenhouse plants.



Exquisite and beautiful plants growing in the garden are changed by seasons. Here you can find plants from wild natures and botanical garden from all over the world. They are being investigated and under acclimatization. The garden exhibition grouped by sections is a priceless material for scientific investigations and opens new secrets of nature for nature enthusiasts. For students of the university the garden is an inexhaustible source of useful information, because here they study botany in practice.  There are approximately 12 thousands sorts of plants in the garden. In the central part of the garden there are ponds and a bust of Sweden botanist Carl Linnaeus (1708 – 1778) has been installed among the verdure.


Botanical garden in Wroclaw is a favorite place of rest. People come here to enjoy nature, to sit on a bench near a pond, to walk along the bridges, to admire beautiful fountains.
